Yangjuan School at a Crossroads

Stevan Harrell sent this report from his visit to Yangjuan-Pianshui last August:

Tiantian-coverWe arrived in Yangjuan on August 25, 2014. It had been raining for several days; it let up for two days, including the first half-day we were there, and then continued to rain for the rest of the six nights and five days we spent there.

There were three groups of people visiting while we were there (in addition to Yanguan co-founder Professor Li Xingxing from Chengdu, and Yangjuan native and current English teacher Ma Fagen):
1. I was with two undergraduate students from the University of Washington (UW), Noah Baseleon-Abbot and Tiffany Fox, who will be spending the year in Chengdu. They began to carry out a survey of high-school and college students' knowledge and use of written Nuosu language. They did this with the help of Ma Xiaolan, Ma Zibo, and several other local college and high-school students.
2. My colleague Dan Abramson, a professor of Urban Planning, who works on changes brought about by the New Socialist Village Campaign on the Chengdu Plain, and also on post-earthquake reconstruction, brought with him his old classmate from Tsinghua, Tao Tao, who now owns a planning firm in Beijing, two UW students, and the Shanghai girlfriend of one of the students, who is an expert sketcher (see more of her  sketches about the trip on her blog).
3. Liang Zhun from Shanghai had with her Mr. Zhang from Chengdu University of Technology. I never really talked much to him, but he seemed very nice, and took a lot of good pictures.

We stayed for five days. Much of Fagen's, Xingxing's, and my time was taken up with the task of figuring out the list of scholarship recipients from Cool Mountain Education Fund. We had more money available to give out this year than in the past, which meant that we could be a little more generous with the college scholarships (we gave 3000 yuan to the 4-year bachelor's candidates, and 2500 to the 3-year associate degree candidates). We also gave 1000 to all those beginning high school or high-school level vocational and technical programs, and we saved some back for next year.

But the most heartening news is about the students. We have been blogging some of their progress: Kaitlin Banfill, who is starting a Ph.D. at Emory University, and who spent last year on a Fulbright fellowship, headquartered at Sichuan University but spending a lot of time in Liangshan, has just blogged about the success of Ma Xiaoyang (the second son and youngest child of Labbu, Fagen's 2nd uncle). Xiaoyang has just taken up a teaching job in Leibo after graduating, along with two of his relatives, from Guang'an Technical College.

Of Ma Xiaoyang's two classmates, Qubi Lisan) is teaching art in middle school in Zhaojue, and Li Musa is teaching English in a middle school in Yantang in Yanyuan. Ma Yifei, a cousin, has a job with an engineering firm in Chengdu, and his brother Ma Zibo is in the second year of law school at Panzhihua University, where he tested 7th out of 130 in his class of almost all Han students, and wants to be a lawyer. Ma Xiaolan is now in her last year of a mathematics teaching course at Xichang College. I finally got to visit her at college, with my two students. She and her classmates showed us around for a hot afternoon, and we had a wonderful time, culminating in ice cream on the shores of Qionghai. Finally, when I spoke at Sichuan Normal University (Liang Wei and Fu Chunmin were there), the real guest of honor was Li Lan, a Yangjuan graduate who is now a sophomore there.

Yangjuan School Faces a Crisis

At the same time as Yangjuan's graduates are doing so well, Yangjuan School itself is experiencing in serious decline. Enrollment was between 300 and 320 students from 2005, the first year there were six full grades, until 2010, at the time of the 10-year celebration. But then people started leaving; upper grade students stayed, but when a class of 40 graduated, it was typically replaced by a class of 15. This year there are only 80 students registered.

Some people attribute the decline in students to the poor quality teaching by "substitute" teachers, and thus indirectly the failure of the County Education Bureau to give the school enough regular, credentialed teachers. This is the principal's view. Indeed, I have sat in on many of substitute teachers' classes, and some of them are awful. This has caused test scores to drop, and many parents are moving their children to more urban schools with the latest equipment, including Internet classes taught by teachers from Chengdu (even Fagen's English classes at Meiyu Middle School have internet teachers from Chengdu).

Another reason is demographic and economic. The population of Yangjuan and Pianshui has declined by about a third in the last five years, with people moving out to Baiwu and Yanyuan, and some families choosing to have only two children, even though the policy allows them to have three.

administrative-mapA third reason is that after the bitterly fought election for Village head (I think it was in 2011 or 2012) between Ma Guohua, the current head, who comes from Yangjuan, and a losing candidate from Pianshui, most Pianshui parents took their children out of Yangjuan school and put them into Baiwu Comprehensive Scbool in the nearby town. So most of the remaining students are from Yangjuan and the neighboring village of Mianba.

For families who choose not to enroll their children at Yangjuan, The typical pattern now is for the parents to go work somewhere (construction is much favored over factory work, because it pays better) while the grandparents rent a cheap room in Yanyuan (some are available for as little as 100 yuan per month) where they live with and cook for the 1st to -3rd grade children. Starting with the 4th grade, the students can board at the Yanyuan schools, but some continue to live with grandparents anyway. I should point out that the decline in student numbers is not just a Yangjuan phenomenon. All the other village schools in Baiwu Township have either closed altogether or severely curtailed their operations— For example, Baoqing, which had four grades when we visited there in 2006 or so, is now down to one.

Yangjuan school is also in a budgetary crisis. Fewer students means less support, which means the facilities deteriorate (leaky roofs are the main problem; the grounds still look beautiful), which means that parents are more likely to pull their students out (or not start them in the kindergarten), which means that enrollment declines, and the downward spiral continues.

 

Possibilities for the Near Future

I had endless, interesting discussions about what the future of the school might be. Right now, it won't close altogether. But there are a series of possibilities:
1) It could continue as a 6-grade school, with an infusion of outside funds. There are possible sources, but we don't know yet whether they will come through.
2) It could be taken over by the County as a regular school, losing its "minban gongzhu" status (民辦公助 -A state-subsidized school run by local people). This would solve the financial and facilities problems, and potentially might solve the problems of not retaining permanent teachers. But I see it as unlikely.
3) It could become a 2- or 3-year village school, serving 6-9 year-olds before they are old enough to go to Baiwu or elsewhere.

I haven't decided what I think about these possibilities. But I want to reiterate Yangjuan's situation is representative of the fate of small rural schools altogether. Even the 9-year comprehensive school at Baiwu, which now has a lot of modern facilities, has seen its elementary school enrollment decline from 1400 to 700 in the last few years (though the middle school enrollments have been steady).

There is another, more remote but very interesting possibility. When I was in Taiwan before traveling to Liangshan, a former student, now a nursing instructor at a local university, wanted to introduce me to her sister's husband, principal of the elementary school at Cajiao in the valley above where we did our fieldwork near Sanxia (a district near New Taipei City). That school has very few local students, because almost all families have moved out of the mountain areas. But the school (which has beautiful buildings and grounds) serves ecologically-minded Sanxia urbanites (a phrase I could not have imagined using when I lived there in the 1970s) who want to send their children to a school in the peaceful countryside where they can learn about the environment and get intensive teacher attention in small classes. People I discussed this with were excited about this as a possibility a decade hence. It seems far-fetched to me now, but 60 college students seemed far-fetched when we started Yangjuan school in 2000.

So we are at a bit of a crossroads. Li Xingxing will be retiring when he turns 65 in January, and he wants someone else to take over the Chengdu responsibility for the scholarships. He is suggesting one of the younger researchers in his institute, but nothing is decided. For my part, I can continue, but I'm inclined to start transferring some responsibility to some of the younger members of the Cool Mountain board; right now Kaitlin Banfill seems like a strong possibility, eventually. She visits Liangshan regularly, and her Ph.D. work will continue the investigation of Nuosu college students and their careers. She speaks pretty good Nuosu, in addition. 

 

It has all been worthwhile

Finally, I want to sum up what I think we have accomplished by building the school and supporting the graduates. As I said in my talk at both Southwest Nationalities University and Sichuan Normal University, if we were starting today, building a school in Yangjuan would be a huge waste of time and money. The Hu Jintao and Xi Jinping administrations have taken rural education seriously, to the point where free education through middle school is easily available to anyone in Yanyuan (I can't speak for more remote areas of Liangshan, but I want to visit and find out more). But we made it available to Yangjuan, Pianshui, and Mianba children about 8 years sooner than it otherwise would have been, and this has not only provided opportunities for education and employment for ordinary villagers, but has nurtured, everyone agrees, a positive attitude toward education and a possibility of education as a life course and a route of social mobility alternate to migrant labor. In other words, people who had the opportunity to study at Yangjuan have leapt ahead half a generation in becoming educated, and the community in general values education greatly, as a means of mobility to be sure, but I also think for its own sake. Our original dreams of community-based education, an educated community of farmers who revere their own as well as the Chinese literate tradition, did not happen, but I think it was a dream based in the realities of the mid-90s, not in the realities of the 2010 decade. We need to be adaptable and change with the times.

Learning Chinese Language the "Chinese Way"

A French young man tells the story of his immersion into Chinese language.

My name is Paul Girard and I am 18 years old. Although I was born in France, I have spent my entire life in China. Back in October 1996, I arrived in Shanghai; I was 9 months old at the time. After attending a French kindergarten for a few years, it was time for me to go to primary school. I was six at that time when my parents decided to enroll me in a Chinese local primary school. I stayed in that primary school for five years, before I went to a larger middle school, where I stayed for three more years. Finally, when my family and I moved to Beijing, four years ago, I left the Chinese schooling system to join a school based on the English education, Yew Chung International School.

Over the years I have worked hard to reach the level of Chinese I have now, but I didn't do it alone. I received a lot of help and support from many people that really motivated me to work and make progress. I have categorised the help and support I received into three main categories: my parents, my teachers, and the Shanghai local education system. They have, each in separate ways, helped me become fluent in Chinese.

I wasn't the only one who struggled when I first started attending my local primary, my mom also paid a significant price by being my tutor every evening, helping with my homework and making me work harder and harder. My mother already had learned Chinese when we arrived in China and I was still a baby. And when I started school, she accompanied me by learning it once again.

My whole first year in primary was spent trying to catch up with all the other students. My mum would spend at least two hours and a half every evening behind my back, forcing me to practice my writing and reading, again and again. There is no better memory than hand-memory; every time I learned a new character or word, my mum would make me copy it several times until I knew how to write it. As for the text we learned during class, my mom would sit me down and have me read them out loud at least three times. Lastly, my mother also gave me a lot of dictations to help with my memory. To sum it up, when the teacher said read one time, my mum would understand "read three times", if the teacher wrote on my diary copy this word ten times, mom would see "copy this word thirty times".

Was I cooperative? Absolutely not, I was six and had no idea how important all this hard work was. First of all, I refused to do any work if she wasn't in the room, which forced her to constantly be there behind me. Secondly, I hated re-reading texts again and again, so I developed a few methods to read them faster. For example, I once read a whole text skipping one character out of two. Another time I would skip every other line. Although my mom would sometimes notice my fraud and I was doomed to restart. And lastly, my mother and I would get into huge arguments on whether or not to redo this dictation for the fifth time of the evening. Looking back at my first few years in primary, they are filled with a mixture of anger and tears and disputes, but also with the content feeling of hard work. It may have been hard, but I am certain that they were worth it, effective and I will never regret them.

I believe that during the first few years of my primary schooling, my mum became a Shanghainese tiger mum. All the other student's parents were very demanding of their kids and put a lot of pressure on them, the class's competition was quite high. In a way, this also forced my mom to put more pressure on me, which helped me make bigger progress.

Overall, I think that without the my mom's continuous hard work of pushing me to work and do more, I would never have been able to survive more than a few month in my first year of Chinese school, even less speak fluently. She was the one who really forged the bases of learning a new language in me.

In eight years of Chinese schools, I have been taught Mandarin by three teachers, Mrs Zhou taught me from y2 to y4, Mr Shen taught me from y5 to y6 and Mr Wu taught me from y7 to y9. While Mr Shen and Mr Wu have been critical teachers in my learning experience, Mrs Zhou wasn't as helpful as them. But lets go back to my previous years at that local primary. I had picked up a few words and sentences at home with our Chinese Ayi and could already participate in basic discussions. But having all my classes, teachers and new friends talk to me in Chinese; that was really different. Let me tell you a small story to show you my Chinese level at the time. During the first class, Mrs Zhou, who was our homeroom teacher decided to play a little vocabulary game. When it was my turn, I was terrified, I had absolutely no idea what to say, my vocabulary wasn't very large, I repeated what the previous student said, but Mrs. Zhou insisted I find a new word. My head fell lower between my shoulders and I looked at the teacher blankly. After what seemed an eternity, Mrs. Zhou sighed and passed my turn. Looking back at that event, I don't think that she understood just how much I was lost in this new Chinese environment. To be fair I was the first French boy in that primary school, and she might have lacked experience. When you have a whole class of kids who already know how to speak Chinese and one who can barely remember ten words, it must be hard to adapt.

But over a few months with me, Mrs. Zhou started to understand that I had more difficulties than the others. She then asked me to stay after school for "Buke" (补课, remedial class). "Buke" was once per week, where I would stay after school with other classmates and a supervising teacher to go over topics I didn't understand. It was a time that allowed me to spend more time than others on texts with a teacher and to copy characters again and again.

Unfortunately for me, Mrs. Zhou, while being supportive and a nice teacher, never thought that I would ever be a fluent Mandarin speaker. She never believed that I, a little French boy, could achieve something this big of a task. And as she didn't completely believe in me, it also had an impact on me, as I didn't put all my efforts in learning Chinese, since I had the excuse of being French. I remember once when I got quite a good mark in Chinese class, the teacher complimented me in front of the class, saying, "I did very good for a foreigner." Saying this not only implied that, as a non-native speaker, I could only do SO well, but it also separated me from all the other students. Students always need some competition with others in order to be motivated to succeed. By separating me from all the other students, it was saying that I couldn't compete with them.

When I got to y5, Mr. Shen, my new mandarin teacher, adopted a new method. After a short time teaching me, he understood why I wasn't doing so well: I wasn't pushing myself to do my best. So he took me apart and said: Paul, you are no different from a Chinese kid, you can do as well as anyone, and if you were to do the right effort, you could speak and write Chinese like any other Chinese. This changed everything; I wasn't a little foreigner struggling in a Chinese school anymore, I was now just a little Chinese boy learning Mandarin. The awakening from Mr. Shen helped me believe in myself, I was now aware that I could do as well as anyone there; it was just a question of working harder. And once again, it was Mr. Shen who helped me "work harder".

Instead of asking me to stay after school for "Buke" (remedial class), he and I would go to his house every Tuesday evening, and he would spend an hour and half of his time to tutor me. I always had problems with reading texts and answering questions from the text. Mr. Shen taught me how to break down the text, the sentences, looking for the appropriate answers. There was also this time where we spent the evening reading football match articles in the newspaper so he could teach me how to write about football matches in my writing. Lastly, I had some trouble remembering complex characters and would frequently make some silly mistakes. He suggested that I remember complicated words by memorizing all the small radicals they were made out of and making a small combo. And to this day every time I write the character德 I murmur:"十四一心" for the right part.

He would also surprised me by preparing noodles for me once in a while when it was getting late. Seeing that he was so dedicated and caring to me only made me want to work harder and more effectively. One of the reasons I am standing here today is because of Mr. Shen. He was the first teacher who believed in me, and never saw the fact that I was non-native as an issue.

By the time I went to middle school, I considered myself completely Chinese, or more specifically Shanghainese, which is indeed different!

In middle school, Mr. Wu was my Mandarin teacher. He was a very patient old man and I liked him since the first day. Although he was quite amused to see a blond headed boy sitting amongst his new students on the first day of school, he didn't make any special remarks or observations and simply started his lesson. Middle school is when students start to study poems and ancient texts. For me, mandarin class quickly became hell every time we would start studying ancient texts. While others would read these texts and understand relatively well, I couldn't figure out what was going on, if it wasn't for the little image on the side of the text, I wouldn't even know what the story was about. Naturally, the remedial classes came back. For three years I stayed after school every Wednesday with a few other students and Mr. Wu for extra classes. During that time we would mainly redo dictations we did during class and spend more time understanding ancient texts.

Once again, just like Mr. Shen did a few years before, Mr. Wu always regarded me as a Chinese student, I would receive no extra compliments if I achieved I got a good grade in an assignment and no less discontent row if I failed at something. In a way, receiving any kind of special treatment for being a foreigner would have infuriated me! Once, my math teacher complimented me in class, saying, "Paul is making significant progress in math. Don't forget that Paul is French and Chinese isn't his first language, and yet he has done well." I couldn't help but feel offended in my pride. I didn't want to be a do well in a subject as a French boy; I wanted to be doing well in a subject as a Chinese boy. I wasn't looking for any extra privileges. I already considered myself Chinese and anyone else who didn't would seriously make me angry, for I felt like what I had achieved was not being recognized.

In the end, the teachers who really helped me become fluent in Chinese were those who saw me as nothing more than a Chinese kid.

I would also like to talk about how the very unique Chinese educational system has helped learned Chinese fluently. I have noticed that the Chinese educational system is based almost entirely on memorizing. Whether it is visually, orally or manually, memorizing is part of learning Chinese.

During my eight years in Chinese schools, there hasn't been one night where I wasn't writing words repeatedly, reciting a text or simply reading it several times. One of the most common homework was copying words or passages from the text into a notebook. I think that there is no way of escaping this; Chinese simply cannot be learned without one using his memory. Starting in primary school, we had to memorize small sections of the text we learned. Later in middle school, we would learn a poem every two weeks and, of course, recite it as well. Lastly, at least once a week, there would be dictations on either poems or just words. A competitive element was added to the dictations, as the ones the most mistakes had to sacrifice their break times copying all their mistakes.

But memorizing isn't just an initial step; this is a continuous process when speaking Chinese. With all the thousand of characters one has to memorize, frequent practice is needed. Once, when I was in y3 we took an extended holiday in summer for three months. When I finally came back to school, I did an initial test to look at my level. I remember very well how embarrassing it was when I got a pitiful 4 out of 100. I even forgot how to write the basic character "本".

Even now, coming back from summer vacations in France, I spend quite some time in the dictionary looking up words.

I have already talked about a lot of things that helped me learn Chinese fluently: memorizing, being considered as "Chinese" by teachers, hard work at home, and yet it isn't enough. In the journey to learning Chinese fluently, the last step is stepping into the streets. By this I mean that to learn Chinese, one should also go out in the city and talk with the Chinese population. Allow me to expand on this point: teachers generally have excellent grammar and pronunciation, they have little or no accent when they talk and they certainly don't use Chinese slang in class. But we cannot deny that a language isn't complete without the charm of all its different accents and the mystery of all its slang, especially the Chinese language, whose accent can change every fifty-kilometer.

A very important step in my learning process towards fluency was going out in the city and simply talking with people, the shop assistant, the taxi driver, and the apartment building's guard. By talking with different people I started paying attention to many details such as different accents, different adverbs, different possible ways to phrase a sentence. I paid attention to how words I learned in class are used by people on a daily basis. This has helped me a lot in the way I speak and communicate with others. When I first arrived in Beijing, my friends even picked up that I had a Shanghai accent.

My journey towards fluency, if I may say, has been emotional and hard, but rewarding. The key points were memorizing, being treated like a Chinese student, hard work at home and frequent practice outside.

Tiger Mountain and the Miculture Foundation: Transforming Spaces

 


Overlooking the Xinyi district, home of Taipei 101 and Taipei's financial and commercial hub, are the Four Beasts Mountains (四獸山) : Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Tiger. The image of four wild animals-embodying raw nature- dominating the urban metropolis below is a powerful one. Elephant Mountain has largely been tamed-it is now a must-see on the Taipei tourist trail and also popular with photographers wanting to get the perfect night-time shot of Taipei 101- but Tiger mountain is more elusive.

Battle of the Languages: Arabic vs. Chinese

The Arabic language has been my principle subject of study, and means of employment, for the past eight years. Recently I came to Taiwan to have a go at Chinese. Four months on and I can say that Chinese is inordinately easier than Arabic! Why? Perhaps some of has to do with improvements in my own language learning method, but I think it is mainly differences in the languages themselves, and in the approach each culture has to teaching its own language.

The principal difficulty with learning Arabic is the disparity between what we learnt in the classroom and what we would hear on the street. In class we learnt what was called Modern Standard Arabic (MSA), a formal language used for books, newspapers, on the news, but rarely for speaking. This meant that though we might be able to write at great length about American foreign policy in class, we could not make ourselves understood when asking for a cup of tea in the cafeteria. To further complicate the problem, the spoken language (aamiyya) varies widely from country to country, city to city, and even sometimes street to street. So even if we were taught to ask for a cup of tea, "I want" can be "aawiz", "biddii", "ureedu", "widdi", "nibbi" and many more variants depending on what region our teacher was from. So in some ways I can understand why aamiyya was considered off limits in the classroom.

Indeed, after five years of Arabic study, and three years working as a translator, I still regularly met people who I could not understand a single word of what they were saying. Here, it is a relief that whether I am in Taipei or Tainan people's accents -to my ear- are more or less the same, and unless one is speaking Taiwanese, I have an equally good chance of understanding either of them.

Another difference is the reading. Arabic, with 28 phonetic characters, compared to the thousands of Chinese characters each with a pronunciation that cannot always be inferred from reading, and sharing only 400 different sounds between them, should be easier, right? The problem is that in standard written Arabic, vowels are not expressed and in Arabic more than in other languages, vowels are very important. This basically means that every unfamiliar word I come I still end up guessing at the pronunciation (meaning aside!), and in Arabic there are a lot of words! It is embarrassing that after all this time I still cannot really read a newspaper or a novel without the help of a dictionary. At least in Chinese, once you have learnt the meaning of a character, and its sound, you can be sure it is a friend for life.

However, the biggest difference for me in how easy it is to learn a language is how well this language is taught, and Arabic for the best part was taught pretty appallingly. Think 1970s textbooks about conferences in East Germany and visits to the Middle East by President Bush (Sr.), long dictations, reading aloud, all the things that it has been agreed are not beneficial to language acquisition. The first words we learnt in our Arabic class, as I recall, were "Foreign Minister", "Summit" and "communiqué". By contrast my Chinese class –in a small, newly-opened language school- is fun, fast-paced and the emphasis is placed squarely on being able to speak Chinese and not to read and write it. Also, because there is a smaller gulf between written and spoken language –當然 for example, although used colloquially, can also be found in newspapers and books. In Arabic, similar expressions would usually be used only in oral communication, and confined to a small geographical area, so would certainly not be found in teaching materials- it is much easier to learn common oral language and to feel like I am fitting in- in linguistic terms!

Living in the Middle East and trying to get by in Arabic required me to become incredibly stubborn, mendacious and sometimes downright rude just to be able to speak Arabic and not English in my day to day life. One time in Yemen we pretended to be Kazakhs for a week. In contrast, trying out the Chinese I have learned so far –while shopping, at work, at the many regular language exchange events held in Taipei-I have received nothing but encouragement, and nothing but Chinese! I have found that people are generally patient, and if it is necessary to resort to English, people do so reluctantly. However, my flat-mate, who is fluent in Chinese, repeatedly complains that he finds the opposite, so perhaps it is just a question of perspective, and beginner's enthusiasm!

One sure way in which Chinese has been much more instantly rewarding is the advance of technology there has been since I was studying Arabic. There are now plenty of new ways to acquire a new language, all of which Chinese has embraced. For one thing, smart phones have been a revelation for me. Gone are the days of piles and piles of tatty paper flashcards scattered around the house and stuffed in my pockets. Downloadable dictionaries like Pleco also have the facility to create and test flashcards. I am using the AV Chinese textbook series and I can even download flashcard packs which correspond to the chapters so that every time we have a test, all it takes is an hour or two of scrolling through the flashcards- when I am walking, a spare few minutes at work, before I go to sleep- and that's vocabulary learning sorted. Social apps like LINE also are really good for keeping in touch with the new friends I've made here and a great way of trying out what I've learnt.

I do in fact like Arabic. I have had some amazing experiences, met unforgettable people, and discovered a treasure of literature and poetry. Yes, it is hard, but it was taught using the wrong methods. The way to learn a language today-or perhaps ever- is not to do a university degree in it! Advances in technology, ease of communication and travel, mean that universities often seem outdated compared to the many more ways to learn a language there now are.

Teaching the "New" Modern Language, Chinese

In parallel to the interviews made with different learners of Mandarin Chinese in Taiwan, we decided to ask various teachers about their experience teaching in Taipei but also abroad, such as Mexico and France. Shufan, for example, has been a teacher of Chinese as a Foreign language for more than five years, her favourite experience being teaching to College students. She also lived in Mexico two years where she taught young children. Feajuar is a slightly less experienced teacher who has now switched to teaching English as a second language in Taiwan. Leo, or "professor Zhu" (朱老師) is one of the rare male teachers of Mandarin in Taipei, we met him at the Tianmu branch of the infamous Taipei Language Institute. Emmanuelle is French and she has been teaching Chinese to junior high school students in France for two years, at Perigueux, she was then in Taiwan for a workshop on teaching Chinese a sa foreign language.

Resources for Learning Chinese

Listening: Podcasts/Radio/Websites/TV

PopupChinese 

Free resource that features podcasts for all abilities, as well as helpful pop-up quizzes and a series of HSK mock questions based on vocabulary learned in the different podcasts. The website also features the Sinica podcast, with news and current affairs in China discussed in English for China watchers who haven't got to grips with the language as yet.

RTI 
Radio Taiwan International offers downloadable programs in Mandarin Chinese (not to mention programmes in Taiwanese and Hakka) for advanced learners who want to get an idea what's in the news in Taiwan.

This is quite a good station with interesting programmes on a range of topics, a little like a Mandarin version of BBC radio 4. The link above is to listen live, but the official website is here if you want to browse different programmes.

There are a plethora of different radio stations that you can listen to but the two listed above seem balanced in their views and catered towards people interested in culture.

Lu Xun collected works on itunes

You can listen to Lu Xun's collected works on itunes, although in general audiobooks are not widely available for more modern writers.

TedXTaipei 

Some of these talks are in Chinese and feature some famous scholars in different fields.

Cheesy soaps and TV programmes

There are a lot of very cheesy TV programmes and dramas that you can hone your listening skills with available online, from "Meteor Garden" back in the day to the more recent "Black & White", a helpful tip is to cover over the Chinese or English subtitles (depending on what version you get your hands on) and try and write down any vocabulary you hear, then you can put the pinyin into one of the dictionaries mentioned below, and possible character combinations will come out, you can then go and compare this with the actual subtitles. If you're not into cheese there are also some other shows that you might find interesting. Below is a very limited list of shows that I've watched or seen brief glimpses of over the last couple of years: 

孽子 Crystal Boys: This is an excellent dramatic adaptation of Bai Xianyong's book of the same name. Following the life of A Qing, a young gay man who has just been chucked out by his father and has to come to terms with his new life and the death of his brother. Like many Taiwanese TV shows it's often bootlegged on youtube or tudou... just saying.

流星花園 Meteor Garden: This show takes the crown in terms of cheesiness (unless you look at some of the Taiwanese language shows). It's cheesy but light and fun (for the first season anyway). 

痞子英雄 Black&White: Familiar story of two detectives in the police force who don't like each other but are forced to work together - it might be a tired trope in the detective genre, but it's in Mandarin and features different areas of Gaoxiong as backdrop. This, like Meteor Garden is an idol drama, so get used to the overacting and sudden swoops into dramatic music, but it's not an awful show.

波麗士大人 Police et vous: Too cool for an English name, this Taiwanese idol drama has a French name instead. Two friends join the police training school only to become love rivals - more cheese and overacting for you to enjoy. 

全民最大黨 Celebrity Imitated Show: This programme is now off the air, but it was a political satire along the lines of "Spitting Image", looking at politics and current affairs. You can still catch some old episodes online. 

大學生了沒 University: A panel of pseudo-celebrity (because of the show) university students compete to tell the funniest anecdote on this show on a diverse (ish) range of topics. This show sometimes even features a few cheesy foreigners like our very own Daniel Pagan Murphy. Reasonably easy in terms of vocabulary except for slang terms.  

There are loads of other shows to explore, expect to see the same format repeating again and again however. Currently I am yet to see the Taiwanese "Breaking Bad" or "Mighty Boosh".

Improving your spoken Chinese


NTU Chinese

This is a free download which assesses your spoken Chinese, extra classes require payment however.

Skype/Online Pals

There are Chinese people out there who want to talk to you, whether online or in your own city, most likely, whether to engage in language exchange or just to make friends. You can check sites like gumtree in your own city or post an ad on a website like tealit in Taiwan or the various ones in mainland China advertising for a language partner. As with anything online, be wary of psychos/con-artists.

If you're not lucky enough to live around the corner from a kareoke joint, you can always go on youtube and sing along to the latest hits, you can even post your own just like Daniel Pagan Murphy (though steady yourself for the tide of abuse that is standard fare in the youtube world). You'd be amazed how often a bit of vocabulary from a song will be useful in every day conversations, particularly if you're going through a really heart-wrenching break-up.

Frustrated that Chinese book stores in the UK don't seem to have noticed that the May 4th Movement happened a while back now? This website provides international delivery of the latest titles, here's a few authors to get you started. 

朱少鳞 Zhu Shaolin - A good author to start with. Chick-Lit full length novels.
胡晴舫 Lolita Hu - Casting a critical eye on different aspects of modern life, interesting essayist.
韓麗珠 Han Lizhu - Not yet read anything by this Hong Kong author, but was recommended by a friend. 
木心 Mu Xin - Chinese author, probably my favourite Chinese author that I've read yet.
阮慶岳 Roan-Ching Yue - This author's short story collection is great.
吳念真 Wu Nien-zhen - This guy is a great story-teller and he uses really simple language well, although he's a little old-school.
白先勇 Bai Xianyong - Don't let the famous name put you off, although I would avoid 台北人 and go for his full-length novel 孽子.

Chinasmack

This is a useful news website that features translations of Chinese articles, the original Chinese pops up in a dialogue box when you hover over a certain paragraph of the translated text.

Wenlin

Wenlin is not for free but it is quite a useful tool in learning Chinese, as it not only has a wide range of definitions, but the definitions library can be added to as you go. You can also draw characters and it will give you suggestions as to what it could be. It employs a hover over system, that allows for easy reading of large chunks of text.

Mandarin Spot

Excellent website that allows you to input big blocks of text and hover over any individual character to get pronunciation and translation. It also parses words automatically.

MDBG

A very useful dictionary that allows you to search for ending characters and sounds as well as beginning ones.

Hanping

Useful app for android phones, pinyin entry possible. Free but there is also a professional edition available.

Pleco

Good basic Chinese dictionary program for smart phones. Excellent for first time learners. Comes with flashcard system.

EC Dictionary

Taiwanese developed phone application. Bigger wealth of definitions than Pleco and more advanced content as well. For advanced users.

Yellow Bridge

A staple of Chinese learning. A particularly useful feature is the capability to search for "fuzzy" pinyin, where the exact pronunciation is not known.

Taiwan Ministry of Education Dictionary

A very advanced Chinese-Chinese dictionary with detailed descriptions of phrases and words. Capable of searching for parts of compounds. If you want the character to appear at the start of a word you can put a ^ before the character, if you want the character to appear at the end of the phrase you can put the $ sign behind it.

Zhongwen extension for Google Chrome

A quick, easy and useful Chinese popup dictionary which supports both simplified and traditional Chinese. Just install it in your browser. Also exists in other languages such as French.

Remembr.it Chinese

Offers free Chinese language course based on the US government's Foreign Service Institutes Mandarin Course.

Other Resources

An interesting talk on associating characters with pictures as a learning aide. Basic stuff but something for everyone to take away from this.

Thinking outside the box: Inventing words and Chinese variants in Taiwan


When reading in Chinese, particularly literature and academic essays on literature or on certain blogs, you'll notice that the author uses combinations of words that don't exist in any dictionary as compounds - this practice, known as 「造詞」(zaoci), is frustrating when one is first trying to get to grips with academic writing or blogs, but eventually you start to appreciate the wit and creative charm behind it. If you've ever read The Meaning of Liff you'll get an idea of what this achieves and the possible comic effects.

This can be done for several reasons.

The first is to translate a foreign concept (or what was once only a foreign concept) into Chinese, many of these are simple but amusingly to the point, examples include 無政府主義 (no-government-ism) as a rendering of 'anarchism', 天主教 (master-of-the-heavens-religion) for Catholicism, or 利己主義者 (interest-self-ism) as a fancy way to say 'egotist' or for someone who subscribes to a self-interested ideology. A lot of these subsequently end up in the dictionary. More recent and artistic examples of this kind of word include both 「多音交響」(duo1yin1jiao1xiang3) "many-tones-symphony" and 「眾聲喧嘩」 (zhong4sheng1xuan1hua2) "many-sounds-clamouring" which attempt to render Mikhail Bakhtin's concept of "heteroglossia" into Chinese. These are usually found in academic articles and the source language equivalent is normally still placed in brackets behind the word to indicate that this is an experimental attempt. These words are also often translated differently in mainland China and Taiwan. 

Another form of zaoci, however, is simply to create a new word by blending aspects of existing words. This form is more interesting and harder to identify, but can sometimes catch on and enter common usage. The technique is generally taking two words (normally consisting of two characters each) and taking one character from the first and one from the second to make a new word. These examples are quite hard to find, as they are essentially invented by the individual on the spot. Here's a short list of some of the more artful ones that I've discovered so far, feel free to add more in the comments box.

1. 「索愛」(suo3ai4) which blends 「索討」(suo3tao3), "to ask for", with 「愛情」(ai4qing4), "love," to mean someone who acts in a cutesy manner to try and get what they want - a near synonym for the mainland Chinese term 「賣萌」(mai4meng2) and the term 「撒嬌」 (sa1jiao1).

2. 「魘醒」(yan3xing2) which is an abbreviation for 「從夢魘中醒來」, "waking up from a nightmare".

3. 「熹亮」(xi1liang4) which combines 「熹微」, "the faint sunlight just after dawn" with 「光亮」(guang1liang4), "bright", to get a synonym of 「微亮」(faint light).

4. 「憤罣」(fen4gua4) which combines 「憤怒」 (fen4nu4), rage, and 「罣礙」(gua4ai4), worry, to mean a rage born of worry.

5. 「離聚」(li2ju4) which combines 「離散」(li2san4), "disperse", and 「相聚」(xiang4ju4), assembly, to mean when an assembly disperses.  

 Using variants is another way to make your writing more aesthetically pleasing (and also dictionary/foreigner proof). A variant is essentially another way of writing a certain character in Chinese which makes no significant change to its meaning. Some have been lost to standardization, but many are still commonly used - both versions in different settings and registers of writing. A common example is 「角色」 vs 「 腳角」. Another is the 「台」 in 「台灣」and 「舞台」 vs 「臺灣」 and 「舞臺」. Sometimes the variants are interchangeable in every combination like 「台」; at other times the variant can only be used when the word forms a verb or a noun, for example, my colleague Jiahe talks about the difference between 「鋪」 and 「舖」 below: 

 

Another colleague, loathe to appear on camera, gave me this explanation of the difference between 「掛礙」 and 「罣礙」, which the Ministry of Education online dictionary states to be the same, meaning that here, 「掛」 and 「罣」 are variants of each other:

我最早學到這個詞的寫法是「罣礙」,它意思應該是阻塞不通,也就是心中被某個煩惱淤塞了。但但後來發現「掛礙」這個寫法比「罣礙」更常見,應該是「掛」有牽掛、懸念的意思,且掛比較好寫,所以人們比較容易寫成「掛礙」。在教育部辭典上可以查到兩者皆通用。是因為語言本來就是一種約定成俗吧。

(Translation: I originally learned to write this word as 「罣礙」, the 「罣」meaning "stuffed up or congested", I interpreted this as one's heart being congested or stuffed up with some worry. However, later I discovered that 「掛礙」was a more common way of writing this word, with the 「掛」 meaning "worry" or "concern". Moreover 「掛」is easier to write, so people are more likely to write the word as 「掛礙」。The two forms of the word can be used interchangably according to the online dictionary of the Ministry of Education. This is because language is essentially just down to convention.)  

 In this second interview, I had the mainlander of the office, Yingying, discuss the variant pairs 「分/份」 and 「姐/姊」:

 

My interest in this subject really started when I changed to using the Cangjie input system - which is an entry system based on visual components of each character (if you're using a computer in Taiwan, these can be found on the bottom left corner of your PC's keys, or bottom right of your Mac's keys) : 

日 (sun radical) + 月 (moon radical) = 明 (bright) for example

Although it's slightly more complicated to learn, it's helpful in getting characters to stick in your head - but as a side effect of this entry system - sometimes strange looking characters pop up when you get a stroke in the wrong sequence, like the long list that appears when you type a sound in pinyin as shown below:

In writing my thesis the title of the play I was discussing includes the character 「間」written 日弓日, but if you put an extra 弓 on the end, then you get 「闁」, a rare archaic variant of the character 「褒」 - meaning to praise. A mistroke in writing 「且」 written 月一 (and) gets you a variant of 「冉」 which is as follows: 「冄」 written 月一一. This is essentially the same as when you're typing in Zhuyin or pinyin and you have to sort through a list of weird characters, but in Changjie you generally only get one character with each combination you type, except on the rare occasions that two characters share the same canjie code, as above. Regardless if you're interested or not in the different ways to input Chinese characters, this really got me interested in why different people chose to use different variants in different situations. A School in the Solomon Islands

During the summer of 2012, while filming for the documentary Writings that Weave Waves, I had the chance to spend ten nights at the St Joseph Tenaru school dormitory. The St Joseph Tenaru Secondary School is located in the outskirts of Honiara, on farm land, and is managed by Marist brothers mostly coming from Papua New Guinea. The school now boasts 425 students majoritarily between 13 and 17 years old. At the eve of the start of school, we interviewed the then principal, Brother John Tukana who told us about the educational and cultural challenges he encountered during his three years spent at St Joseph.
