The poem Sakinu read can be found below in both the Chinese original and the English (translated by Shuhwa Wu):

Just to remember

The moment the airplane lands
I know we breathe the same air, a sweet air.
The cool breeze reminds me—I am in kind hands.
I love the way you walk bare-foot, something "civilized" people have lost.
I love the way you gaze, a gaze the civilized people have forgotten.
It is because they do not understand what human beings really are.

Your laughter is beautiful, like the blowing breeze that bring people close.

Your warm welcome and your kindness empower me.

No need for traffic lights. There is order in your community which civilized societies have been longing
for.

Your vision is broad and free, given that there are no tall buildings seen.

No need for pedestrian crossings. The land gives you freedom to walk across the roads.
And there are no beggars seen along roads, unlike in civilized societies.

Is this a dream? I ask myself.
I close my eyes and think.

Once, long, long ago, we were families; we watched the same sun.

Once, long, long ago, hand in hand, we watched the same moon, our hearts close.

You ask me how many stars there are in my country.
Let me tell you: there are as numerous stars in my sky as yours.
I feel your hospitality, so sincere and open.
I feel the passion of this land; it embraces us whole-heartedly.
Is this a dream? I ask.

No. It's real.

I knew once we were family. We watched the same sea and sang the same songs.
We are brothers and sisters; we are family.
No one, nothing can change this!

How wonderful it is to see you and be with you, my dear family in the South Pacific Islands.
It's a dream comes true.

Our gathering and reunion will always stay in my memory.
No one can take away what we treasure so much at heart.
Although we live far apart,
When I miss you,
I know there is a way,
A way to be close to you—just to remember
