Tibetan New Year in Litang

Located in Ganze prefecture, Sichuan province, Litang, at an altitude of 4014 meters,, is supposed to be the highest town in the world. The Changqingchunke’er Monastery was created by the 3th Dalai Lama in the year 1580.

For Tibetan New Year, which now takes place around the same time as Chinese New Year, the monastery gathers large crowds of monks and faithful.

A dance of good wishes is performed, Buddhist classics are chanted, and monks conduct disputations on points of doctrine. These disputations go with rhetorical gestures and expressions.

The monks receive offerings from the faithfuls, they light candles and deliver blessings.

A festive season of fifteen days follows the first three days of the New Year festival.
